Citizenship rules can change and small factual differences matter. Use the official links below before filing or making a legal decision.
01
General five-year route
The usual naturalisation route requires five years' UK residence, physical presence in the UK exactly five years before the application is received, no more than 450 days outside the UK over that period and no more than 90 days outside in the final 12 months.
The applicant normally must have held ILR, settled status or indefinite leave to enter for 12 months before applying.
02
British spouse or civil partner route
The spouse route uses a three-year residence period, an exact three-year start-date check, no more than 270 days outside across the period and no more than 90 days in the final 12 months.
The applicant needs settled status but does not normally need to wait 12 months after receiving it.
03
Build a complete travel record
List every departure and return using passports, emails, tickets and calendar records. GOV.UK says the Home Office will check its records and may correct gaps, but the applicant should still provide the fullest accurate account possible.
Do not confuse immigration-route continuous residence rules—often expressed as days per 12-month period—with the separate nationality absence rules.
04
When limits are exceeded
Naturalisation is discretionary. Home Office policy explains when excess absences, a missed start date or other residence issues may be overlooked. Factors can include established home, family, employment, unavoidable travel and Crown or designated service.
Discretion is case-specific and is not a calculator entitlement. Explain facts and evidence rather than claiming an automatic exception.
05
Choose the application date carefully
Online applications are normally received the day they are submitted. Moving the application date can change the exact qualifying-period start date, the rolling final year and which trips fall inside the full period.
Check immigration status validity, absence calculations, language and Life in the UK evidence, referees and good character before submitting and paying a non-trivial fee.
